The village of Gerwigshain was located approximately 3 km northwest of Mengsberg, on the road to Hatzbach (locally known as Butterweg), near the site of a deserted church, in the headwaters of a stream flowing towards Mengsberg. The field name appears in various forms: 1555 "Wüstung Gerwichshain" (deserted village of Gerwigshain), 1576 "Gerbisheim", around 1614 "Wüste Gerwigshain" (deserted village of Gerwigshain), 1708/10 "Wüste Kirche" (deserted church). Usually, abandoned villages consist of a sign and nothing else. The abandoned village of Gerwigshain has church remains and a spring, which helps to stimulate the imagination. Like the Glockenborn, I imagine a swampy spring hole in the middle of the forest in which a church bell could be sunk.

On a sunny, warm day we spent a shady break here on historic ground.

A 7 km and a 12 km hiking trail "Around the Wetzstein" start at this hiking car park. Well marked on mostly solid paths, it leads through an intact forest. 3 shelters, lots of explanatory panels with historical background and beautiful nature actually make this trail a secret "extra tour". The upper source area of the Hatzbach is protected for good reason. There is a lot to see on this varied hiking trail, interesting stories and more rest areas / benches than we had food with us, and that was even though we were at the Speckswinkel and walked the Butterweg :-). More information is available on the hiking boards.
