The village of Groß Flotow was first documented in 1418 and likely originated as a Slavic settlement. The building is a solid brick structure with three basket-bottomed gateways. Two of them have already been bricked up. An inscription above the central entrance documents its construction in 1933. The gatehouse has a pyramidal roof. At the top of the gate roof is a small, square wooden tower. The clock in the tower now operates as a radio-controlled clock and chimes every half hour. The weathervane with the stag is once again rotating atop the gatehouse.
