The Burial Mounds near Warensberg

Highlight • Historical Site

To the north of Warensberg there are 5 burial mounds covered with stones and overgrown with trees that are visible from afar! Very well preserved archaeological monuments that are typical of the North German landscape! About 650 meters southeast of here (at Glockenberg) there is another very distinctive burial mound, the so-called "King's Cradle"!

Heinrich Schliemann told the well-known legend of the knight Henning Bradenkierl:
Henning von Holstein was a cruel robber baron who lived in the castle of Ankershagen. When he planned an attack on the Duke of Mecklenburg, his attack was thwarted by a cowherd's warning. The knight took cruel revenge on the traitor and threw him into the fireplace. When the cowherd fought for his life and wanted to get out of the flames, the robber baron kicked him back. This is said to have earned him the name "Bradenkierl" (roast guy). Not long afterwards, Henning Bradenkierl was killed by the Duke, but the dead man's soul found no peace. The dead robber baron's foot is said to have repeatedly grown out of the ground up to his knee, until finally the severed leg was buried in the church under the altar.
