Small chapel at the exit of the village perched on a rocky spur, magnificent!

The Pentland Hills (a range of hills south of Edinburgh) offer countless hiking opportunities. One of the "best" (= the northernmost) is Allermuir Hill. There are many paths up the mountain, but the best route is undoubtedly the panoramic route from the Midlothian Snowsports Center parking lot to the summit. The center is...???...interesting... (Skiing on mats in the summer is also possible!), and the summit offers magnificent views in all directions!

Stunning views. Path gets very gravelly so care needed if you are less experienced off-road

After the peaks it's all flat terrain and definitely more busy on a dry day. Walk the way back after the last peak if you prefer the challenge of it.

This is one of the most prominent hills of the Pentland Hills. You have superb views toward Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth, and on clear days, even the Fife and Scottish Highlands. The walk to the summit is moderate, and you'll be walking through diverse landscapes from grassy slopes to more rugged and rocky sections near the top.

Nestled amongst the Pentland Hills, Glencorse Reservoir is incredibly picturesque. It was built between 1820 and 1824 to provide water to mills in the area and supply drinking water to Edinburgh. Today, the reservoir still supplies water to 450,000 people. The reservoir was created by constructing a dam, which is 77 feet (23.5 m) at its highest point.

Dalkeith Country Park is an excellent choice for families. It offers several waymarked trails that are mostly flat and wind through ancient woodlands. The park also has a playground and café, making it a perfect day out.
Dogs are welcome on most trails in Midlothian, including in the Pentland Hills Regional Park and Dalkeith Country Park. However, you should keep them on a lead, especially near livestock and during bird nesting season (April-July). Always be prepared to clean up after your dog.
For a strenuous but rewarding day out, consider the Scald Law, the Kips & Glencorse Reservoir loop. This long route covers multiple peaks, including the highest point in the Pentlands, and involves significant elevation gain, testing your fitness while delivering incredible views.

The Pentland Hills Regional Park has several car parks. The Flotterstone car park is a popular starting point for many routes on the eastern side of the hills, but it can get very busy, especially on weekends. Arriving early is highly recommended. The car park at Lothianburn is another good option for accessing Allermuir Hill.
Roslin Glen Country Park is perfect for this. The area is steeped in history, with riverside paths that take you past the ruins of Roslin Castle and offer views of the famous Rosslyn Chapel. The Roslin Castle & the River North Esk loop is a fantastic way to combine nature with history.

Yes, Midlothian has several beautiful reservoir walks. For a peaceful and relatively flat walk, the Hirondean Castle & Gladhouse Reservoir loop is a great option. It's a haven for birdwatchers and offers a tranquil escape.
Scottish weather is famously changeable, so layers are key. Always wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots as paths can be muddy and uneven. A waterproof jacket is essential, even if the forecast is good. In the hills, it's also wise to carry a hat, gloves, and an extra warm layer.
