In the Garrotxa Natural Park there are about 40 catalogued volcanoes with 10 well-preserved explosion craters. The Volcá del Croscat is a highly explosive Strombolian volcano. The eruption took place around 9,500 BC. It is the last volcano to erupt in the Garrotxa volcanic area and also in the Iberian Peninsula. In these Baumas and cavities, a certain number of protected cave-dwelling invertebrates and Bats live. It is advisable not to ENTER some of these Baumas and ensure that our passage through the area causes the least possible impact.🙋

For a memorable family adventure, consider the circular route exploring the Volcán de Santa Margarida and Volcán del Croscat. This trail takes you through the unique volcanic landscape, allowing you to explore two distinct volcanoes. Another great option is the Salt del Batlle and the pools of Santa Pau, which combines natural beauty with refreshing water features.
Yes, Garrotxa has several trails featuring beautiful water elements. The Salt del Batlle and the pools of Santa Pau route is an excellent choice, offering picturesque pools perfect for a refreshing stop. You can also explore the Gorges of Les Planes d'Hostoles Loop, which features stunning gorges and water formations.
Garrotxa's unique volcanic landscape is a major highlight. You can explore dormant volcanoes like the Santa Margarida Volcano, where a Romanesque church sits within its crater, or witness the striking red-and-black rock formations of the Croscat Volcano Scoria Slopes. The region is also rich in diverse forests, including the enchanting Fageda d'en Jordà beech forest, which grows atop an ancient lava flow.
Garrotxa is beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for family hikes. In spring, the landscape is lush and green, while autumn offers spectacular colors, especially in the beech forests like Fageda d'en Jordà. Summers can be warm, so early morning or late afternoon hikes are recommended, and winters are generally mild, making it suitable for hiking if you dress appropriately.
While many trails in Garrotxa involve varied terrain due to the volcanic landscape, the Carrilet Greenway offers a flat, converted railway line that is ideal for pushchairs and very young children. For specific routes, look for trails explicitly marked as 'easy' on komoot, and always check the route details for elevation and surface information.

Yes, many popular trailheads in Garrotxa, especially those within the Volcanic Zone Natural Park, offer designated parking areas. It's advisable to arrive early during peak seasons to secure a spot. Some areas, like the Fageda d'en Jordà, have large paid parking lots to manage visitor flow.
