The view of the Saarpolygon is fantastic, especially from the top of the slag heap.

During the renovation, cannons dating back to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 were placed on the exterior of the German Gate. One of them was found in the mud during the construction of the Saaraltarm recreation area; the other was purchased. Both cannons were manufactured by Krupp. Source: Wikipedia

The quiet path leads through the Ellbach valley. I was happy to read that the Ellbach is being rebuilt. The valley is to be renaturalized from the source to the mouth by 2027. New habitat for birds and dragonflies is to be created. Ecological deficits caused by the straightening are to be compensated. In spring 2024, the Ellbach led to major flooding in Saarwellingen, certainly a result of the straightening and stream bed destruction in connection with climate change. https://www.saarbruecker-zeitung.de/saarland/saarlouis/saarwellingen/saarwellingen-ellbach-wird-renaturiert_aid-119168365
