Former NATO missile base. In the midst of the Cold War, it was part of a complex system of 12 bases scattered throughout the Triveneto region, for the control and defense of the entire airspace of the Northeast: a possible and feared window for an attack by the Warsaw Pact. Civil and military traffic was constantly monitored: every aircraft was intercepted and, if not identified as friendly, the defensive procedure was immediately activated. Fortunately, during the Cold War, not a single shot was fired, but there were moments of tension and false alarms! The base consisted of 3 distinct sites: - The Logistics Area (barracks, warehouses, workshops) in Tonezza del Cimone; - The Control Area (radar, mobile repeaters, and command vehicles) on the summit of the nearby Monte Toraro; - The Launch Area (Nike-Hercules missiles) near Lago Coe, now transformed into this museum. The missiles were normally placed inside the hangar, but in case of alarm, they were brought out and raised into launch position in a few minutes; the radars and command vans (now next to the rockets) were actually located on Toraro; the F-104 on display was the interceptor fighter that was immediately dispatched in case of a suspicious vehicle (not from here, but from lowland air bases). The base was active from 1966 to 1977: it was decommissioned before the end of the Cold War (1991) because the period of greatest tension had passed and because it was very expensive to maintain, due to the high altitude and the very harsh winters, at the time with 4-5 meters of snow. Base Tuono constitutes the only testimony in Europe of a NATO missile base from the Cold War, because all others have been dismantled. Paid entry: free visit (with numerous and exhaustive information panels) or with a guided tour of over 1 hour (highly recommended).
