In 1775, a riding hall located here was converted into a comedy and circus theater, and from 1779 onwards it was called the "Mecklenburg-Strelitz Court Theater." In January 1924, the building, which had been used as a theater for 150 years, burned down to its foundations. According to plans by the Munich theater architect Max Littmann, a new building was constructed from 1925 to 1928 by the then Free State of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and opened on June 2, 1928, with Mozart's opera "Così fan tutte." From 1952 to 1954, the theater, which had been destroyed by arson on April 30, 1945, was rebuilt by the architects Böckler, Conell, and Torka, retaining its exterior; the interior was redesigned in a modern style. From then on, it was called the Friedrich Wolf Theater. From 1991, the theater was known as the Mecklenburg State Theatre, and since 2000 as the Neustrelitz State Theatre. In 2021, as part of the "Castle Church, Surroundings, and Swan Pond" project, the Swan Pond, among other things, was renovated. The pond was desilted, and a small park and a circular path were created around it.
