Steep ascent with MTB from Herisau, first on a meadow path and then on a forest path. Inside the castle walls, a rather large rest area with a fireplace.

Great view of the valley!! Really beautiful! (Not a very technical path but on the mountainside, so be careful if you have vertigo)

Breathtaking view! Superb trail. If you are not comfortable with chains, it is better to take it uphill than downhill.

Berggasthaus Alter Säntis is an Alpine hut located on the summit of Säntis, approximately 2,500 meters above sea level, in the Alpstein massif, Appenzell, Switzerland. This cozy hut offers a breathtaking panoramic view that extends from Appenzellerland and Alpstein to Lake Constance, the Alps of Vorarlberg, Graubünden and Central Switzerland, and extends across the Swiss plateau to the Jura. Just a two-minute walk from the top station of the Säntisbahn, the hut is easily accessible for hikers and visitors who prefer the cable car. Its sunny terrace and traditional local cuisine make it an ideal stopover for those who want to enjoy a meal with a view. For those who want to stay overnight, Berggasthaus Alter Säntis offers different options: double rooms, multi-bed rooms and a cozy dormitory, adapting to the different needs of guests. Activities include hiking, climbing and ski tours, making the refuge a starting or finishing point for numerous alpine adventures. The facility is open daily from mid-May, closing every Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. For more information or to make a reservation, you can contact the managers Ruedi and Claudia Manser-Abderhalden at +41 71 799 11 60 or by email at info@altersaentis.ch.
