To the highest peak of the Alpstein – spectacular Säntis Tour

Hiking

You can be sure of a spectacular 360-degree panorama on this circular hike. From the summit of Säntis you have a view of no less than six countries: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy and France. No wonder, as it is the highest mountain in the Alpstein and the Lake Constance region. But the Säntis has even more to offer: an interactive adventure world and two restaurants welcome you to the summit.

You start your hike at the foot of the Säntis at the valley station of the Säntis suspension railway and the Schwagalp at an altitude of 1,350 meters. Now you could be comfortably transported to the summit of the Säntis (2,502 meters high). However, the climb described in the tour is more fun.

You can warm up a little on the small street that you initially follow. The route continues steeply and secured by steel cables to the Musfalle rock bastion. You alternately walk over grass and scree up to your elbows before you can take a well-deserved break at the Tierwis mountain inn. Now it's time to mobilize your calf fat again and climb the next few meters to the top of the mountain. The last section to reach the summit runs over the Himmelsleiter, an almost vertical rock ladder. Breathtaking...

The descent takes place on the challenging alpine hiking trail “Nostrils Route”. The tour is suitable for experienced mountain hikers who are in good physical condition, have a head for heights and are sure-footed.

Säntis Summit (2,502 m)

Highlight • Summit

At 2,502 meters, the Säntis is the highest mountain in the Alpstein Mountains. The Säntis lies on the border between the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Aargau, and St. Gallen. The mountains are composed of limestone and marl. The cable car takes hikers from Schwägalp up the mountain. Even in June, snow lies here and temperatures are icy. From the Säntis, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Alpstein Mountains, the Appenzellerland, Lake Lucerne, and Lake Constance.

Nasenlöcher Route

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

We took the Noseholes route on the way back because we thought it was less steep. However, the descent via Tierwies is easier as it is better secured. It is better to choose the Noseholes route uphill!

Trail Reviews

Benjamin
August 14, 2022, Berggasthaus Tierwies – Himmelsleiter Runde von Wildhaus Lisighaus

The descent was tough. Luckily it was dry. Sure-footedness required, otherwise there is a risk of a serious fall in various places. It is not without reason that there are almost no photos of the descent.

Finished work a little earlier and then "quickly before it got dark" from the Schwägalp over the nostrils up to the Säntis and down again via Tierwies. Was just enough without having to unpack the headlamp. This time again crawled into both nostrils.

Do not use this option in wet conditions; no rain for at least 48 hours.

The area is beautiful. The view is sensational when the weather is clear! But surefootedness is required, otherwise you will want to climb higher

Translated by Google

The ascent via nostrils is much less committed than the normal route. But it is also more demanding with some cracks secured by wire rope (about 30m). Around T4

It is a total of 13.6 km. The section between A and B is recorded incorrectly. The route from Schwägalp to the summit is mostly marked white - red - white. The descent via Lisengrad is 2/3 high alpine terrain (white - blue - white) and requires appropriate experience and sufficient endurance. In some places you have to climb.

the nostril route is marked blue/white T4, Öhrli is not marked T4+ and the paths to Säntis and the descent of course still require a head for heights (T3) To be honest, after yesterday's really brilliantly beautiful tour on the Schesaplana, I didn't want to go out at first... the next tour can almost just be "abandoned"... but no, things turned out differently and today's tour was simply wonderful again something very special 😊💗. The atmosphere, the peace and quiet on the tour and the animal encounters were simply enchanting and fascinating 🥰😍😍😍. The route over the nostrils to the Öhrli doesn't normally excite me that much, the route is really cool and fun 😄👌, but the way there is a bit boring and the views from the route over Appenzellerland don't really excite me either... But today it was really lonely here and so I quickly felt blissful 😇 and enjoyed the path, the peace and the climbing anyway 😊 ... the wind almost blew me away on this section, but the beautiful clouds that appeared fascinated me and the view of the rock too 😍. I briefly scramble up the Öhrli, but the wind is clearly too strong for me up there today, so I climb back down and take a rest below the little head... here it's actually completely calm again and I enjoy it very much and stay for a while Wait a while and observe the moods 🥰🥰🥰... ... later I continue on the normal route to Säntis. On the way I spot ibexes and crouch down a little off the path, but still at a fairly large distance from them, and watch them 🥰🥰🥰 ... at some point they come closer and walk right past me ... wow, the animals are very fascinating 😍😍😍. I pay a quick visit to the Säntis and later make myself comfortable on the Girenspitz... yes and as is often the case, the later it gets, the quieter it gets and so I start the descent in the wonderful solitude.. . that means I'll run into cute stone goats later 🥰🥰🥰.

A head for heights is required on the blue/white marked path via the Nose Holes Route (T4), a path that leads up in the shade and has slight scrambling spots 😄👍, on the unsigned and unmarked short ascent/descent to the Öhrli (T4), which only can be reached with a little scrambling 😄👍. The red and white marked paths just before the saddle to the Girenspitz and on the descent over the Tierwies down to the Schwägalp also require a head for heights. That was a really nice afternoon tour and with perfect timing to hike down from the Girenspitz to Schwägalp in the wonderful evening mood 🥰🥰🥰 and also the late inspection of the paths also had the advantage of being practically alone on the otherwise well-frequented paths 👍 🥰🥰🥰. Yes, and the route over the nostrils and the tough ascent/descent on the Öhrli is always fun for me anyway 😄😄 and the section from the Öhrligrueb to the Girenspitz is just beautiful 😍. That was a cool round with a nice atmosphere, only the wind was a bit nasty on the two peaks ... otherwise I'll just let the pictures do the talking 😊
