Genieten op 2 Wielen
August 1, 2026, Bunkers bij Fiemel

Batterij Fiemel in Termunten is part of the Atlantikwall. The Atlantikwall is a defense line over 5000 kilometers long along the west coast of Europe. The line runs from the south of France to the north of Norway. The Germans built the defense system to prevent an allied invasion from the sea. East of Termunten lies the Punt van Reide. Due to its strategic location, it was often a theater of war during the Eighty Years' War, the French period, and the Second World War. With a view to defending the port of Emden, the Germans built a gun emplacement on the Punt van Reide, and barracks on wooden platforms against the high water. In 1943, they sought drier shelter. Near Fiemel, they established the Marine Flak Batterie. During the liberation of Groningen, heavy resistance was offered from this position.

In Termunterzijl, this lock is indispensable. The target arch was built around 1725. Characteristic of the lock is the natural stone parapet with the coats of arms of the responsible water authorities.

Here you can observe up to 100 seals on good days, frolicking on the beach. The observation wall at Polder Breebaart is a short walk from the visitor center "Buitenplaats Reiderhoeve". You can also park your car here. A paved path leads you from the visitor center to the observation wall.
