Johann Joachim Winckelmann, a native of Stendal and founder of scientific archaeology, was murdered in Trieste in 1768 by a prostitute, to whom he had previously shown the gold decorations and medals awarded to him by Empress Maria Theresa. The trial records have been preserved and translated into German, but Winckelmann's homosexuality remains a controversial issue today.
