As a waterfall it is about 5/10, as a hike about 3/10, ( extremely muddy when we did it), but for forest birdlife, 8/10.

Schofield Barracks saw considerable damage and casualties during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The barracks suffered collateral damage as it was positioned right beside the Wheeler Airfield. This happened during the first phase of the Pearl Harbor Attack. By destroying much of the US warplanes in Oahu, the Japanese were cleared to launch a virtually efficient air raid on the US Navy in Pearl Harbor.

This guide highlights three distinct hiking routes accessible from bus stations near Wheeler Army Airfield. These trails offer a range of experiences, from moderate forest loops to more challenging paths.
Yes, while this guide features routes of moderate to difficult grades, the broader region offers options. For instance, the Hiking loop from Schofield Barracks is considered moderate and provides a good introduction to the area's natural beauty. The nearby Wahiawa Botanical Garden also offers a very easy, short walk through a lush rainforest, though it's not specifically a bus station hike featured here.
The trails accessible from bus stations in this region often traverse lush tropical forests, offering shaded pathways and rich biodiversity. You can expect to encounter varied terrain, including some steep ridges and stream crossings, characteristic of Oahu's Waianae and Koʻolau mountain ranges. For example, the Ewa Forest Reserve loop from Pearl City High School takes you through dense forested areas.
Yes, this guide includes circular routes. Both the Hiking loop from Schofield Barracks and the Ewa Forest Reserve loop from Pearl City High School are designed as loops, allowing you to return to your starting point without retracing your steps.
The komoot community rates the trails in this region highly, with an average score of 4.6 stars from 14 ratings. Hikers often praise the immersive experience of the tropical forests and the sense of adventure provided by the varied terrain, including stream crossings and ridge hikes.
While many trails in Oahu are dog-friendly, specific regulations can vary by location, especially within forest reserves or military installations. It's always best to check the latest rules for the specific trail you plan to hike. For general guidance on dog-friendly trails in the wider Oahu area, local resources often provide up-to-date information.
Yes, the Waimano Falls loop from Pearl City High School is specifically known for leading to Waimano Falls, offering a refreshing destination during your hike. This trail is considered difficult, so be prepared for a challenging but rewarding experience.
Oahu generally offers pleasant hiking weather year-round due to its tropical climate. However, the cooler, drier months from November to April are often preferred for hiking. During the wetter summer months (May to October), trails can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain, so appropriate footwear is essential regardless of the season.
The bus stations serving these trails are typically located in or near residential and commercial areas. For example, Pearl City High School is in a developed area, and Schofield Barracks has facilities. You'll find various cafes, restaurants, and convenience stores in the nearby towns of Wahiawa and Pearl City, offering options for pre- or post-hike refreshments.
Given the tropical forest environment and potential for stream crossings, it's recommended to wear moisture-wicking clothing, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, and bring plenty of water. Insect repellent is also advisable. Depending on the trail, a light rain jacket might be useful, as tropical showers can occur unexpectedly.
Yes, trails located on active military installations, such as parts of the Kolekole Trail near Schofield Barracks, often have restricted access. These typically require Department of Defense identification or a visitor pass, and may only be open on select dates. Always check with the U.S. Army MWR Hawaii or relevant authorities for the most current access rules before planning your hike.
Beyond the lush tropical forests and mountain views, some trails offer glimpses of Oahu's unique natural environment. While direct access to Wheeler Army Airfield is restricted, the surrounding region provides opportunities to experience diverse landscapes. The Waimano Falls loop, for instance, leads to a beautiful waterfall, a popular natural attraction.
