Schofield Barracks saw considerable damage and casualties during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The barracks suffered collateral damage as it was positioned right beside the Wheeler Airfield. This happened during the first phase of the Pearl Harbor Attack. By destroying much of the US warplanes in Oahu, the Japanese were cleared to launch a virtually efficient air raid on the US Navy in Pearl Harbor.

Puʻu Hapapa Summit Trail is the challenging part of your hike to Puʻu Hapapa Summit. It includes many tough inclines, rock scrambling and drop-offs that are not for you if you are afraid of heights. But on the other hand, this trail also offers great views, especially once you reach the ridge.

Kolekole Trail is the first section of the hike to Puʻu Hapapa. It's a relatively easy hike without big inclines, and you don't need to have any experience in hiking (if you however want to continue to the summit, we're talking about much more inclines and more demanding trails!). As the trail is located on military land, make sure that you need a valid DOD card or a visitor pass to access the trail.

Even though this little 'hike' through Wahiawa Botanical Garden probably won't get your heart pumping, it's still a very nice stroll through nature with many interesting information plaques about the local flora and fauna. The perfect recovery before your next, challenging hike!

Wahiawā Hills Trail is a relatively easy and short trail in the Ewa Forest Reserve. But be aware that there are still a lot of ups and downs, so you will certainly get your exercise. The trail crosses the river multiple times, and you can take a dip in one of the pools along the trail in the middle of the wooded landscape.

The trails in this area are a mix. Some, like the Kolekole Trail and Schofield-Waikane Trail, are on military land and require a Department of Defense or military ID for access, often with additional permits or on specific non-live-fire days. Other trails, such as those in the Ewa Forest Reserve, are on public land and are more broadly accessible.
Expect a true tropical hiking experience. Trails often feature lush forests, steep ridges, and stream crossings. The terrain can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear with good grip is essential. You'll encounter a mix of well-maintained paths and more rugged, overgrown sections.
Yes, there are options suitable for families. For a very gentle and educational walk, the Wahiawa Botanical Garden loop is a short, easy path through a beautiful collection of tropical plants. It's a great way to experience the local flora without a strenuous climb.
For experienced hikers seeking a tough workout, the Puʻu Hapapa via Kolekole Trail is an excellent choice. This difficult route involves steep scrambles and traverses narrow ridges, rewarding your effort with incredible 360-degree views of Central Oahu and the Waianae Range.
Leashed dogs are generally permitted on trails within the Ewa Forest Reserve, such as the Wahiawā Hills Trail. However, trails on military installations like Schofield Barracks typically do not allow pets. Always check the specific regulations for the trail you plan to hike before bringing your dog.
Yes, you can find waterfalls in the region. The Waimano Falls loop from Pacific Palisades is a popular but challenging hike that leads to a waterfall and swimming hole. Be prepared for a steep and often muddy descent to the falls.
The trails in this region are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Hikers often praise the lush, jungle-like scenery, the challenging ridge climbs, and the stunning panoramic views from the summits.
The trails offer a chance to see a variety of native Hawaiian plants, including ʻŌhiʻa lehua, Koa, and Naupaka. The forests are also home to native birds. Hikes like the Schofield-Waikane Trail are particularly noted for their rich native flora.
Yes, the Wahiawā Hills Trail loop is a great option. This nearly 5-mile trail in the Ewa Forest Reserve provides a good workout with its constant ascents and descents through a beautiful tropical forest, bringing you back to your starting point.
Always bring plenty of water, as the heat and humidity can be intense. Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction for muddy and rocky sections. Let someone know your hiking plan, as cell service can be unreliable in the valleys. Finally, never drink from streams or falls without treating the water first due to the risk of leptospirosis.
While many trails are purely natural, some hikes like the popular Lanikai Pillbox Trail on the windward side feature historic World War II-era military bunkers. Near Wahiawa, you can also visit the Kukaniloko Birthstones State Monument, a significant ancient cultural site, though it is not part of a hiking trail itself.
If you're looking for a longer trek with fewer crowds, consider the Waimano Ridge Trail. This trail takes you through areas with giant fan palms and large koa trees on a lengthy journey toward the Ko'olau Summit, offering a more remote experience.
