As the only one of the former five city gates, the Romanesque Nikolaitor has been preserved. At the exit of Karlsplatz towards Bahnhofstraße, directly next to the Nikolaikirche, one left the city through this gate in an easterly direction. Until 1832, the city gates were closed every evening. After that, the wall structure increasingly fell victim to increasing traffic. The Nikolaitor dates from around 1170. The Wandelhalle – this striking building in Eisenach is located on Wartburgallee. Such magnificent structures are normally only found in large spa towns. But Eisenach is not a spa town. Or is it? Around 1900, corresponding plans were certainly germinating in the Wartburg town. A spring supplied healing water, spa hotels opened, and on July 8, 1906, the drinking and Wandelhalle was inaugurated on Wartburgallee (today's B19). The historic building has been renovated piece by piece since 2004. The renovation work for the final construction phase began in September 2017 and has now been completed. The striking, listed building has thus been standing for more than 100 years. Source: https://www.eisenach.de/kultur/wandelhalle/

Thuringian Eisenach is primarily known for the Wartburg Castle and the Bach House – and not necessarily as a significant spa town. Yet, a magnificent Wandelhalle (promenade hall) stands here. How did it come about? The sovereign Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst (1876-1923) wanted to make Eisenach a spa town; the Trink- und Wandelhalle (drinking and promenade hall), built in 1906, was intended to become the center of spa operations. It is located in an impressive garden complex, the "Kartausgarten". This is the oldest public park in the city and a popular local recreation area. With the help of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, the Wandelhalle could be preserved, which to this day impressively testifies to the city's history and the former spa operations in Eisenach. The historic, listed commercial building at Johannisplatz 18–20 looks back on a rich banking and architectural history. The striking building, often noticeable for its distinctive corner turret with a clock, served for many years as the representative branch of Commerzbank.

The memorial site, opened in 1907 by the Neue Bachgesellschaft, is located at Frauenplan 21 and consists of a historic half-timbered house, around 550 years old, as well as an award-winning modern extension. Visitors can expect an exhibition area of over 600 square meters with around 250 to 300 original exhibits, historic living rooms, and multimedia installations.

The Wandelhalle is a testament to the former spa operations in the Wartburg town. Shortly after 1900, the "Kur- und Mineralbad Eisenach" (Eisenach Spa and Mineral Bath) was gradually built on the southern edge of the town. As early as 1902, the modern, upper-class "Kurhaus Hotel Fürstenhof" opened northeast of the Kartausgarten, equipped with what was probably the largest ballroom in Thuringia (for 1800 people). The Wandel- und Trinkhalle (Walking and Drinking Hall), built in 1905/1906, formed the center of the spa operations from its opening in July 1906.
