According to an old tradition, its origin goes back to a citizen of Friedberg who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land between 1300 and 1350. On his way back, he was taken prisoner by the Turks and vowed to build a chapel modeled after the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem upon his return. Thanks to his fortunate return, he was able to fulfill this promise. The present pilgrimage church was built in 1731. It impresses with its three-aisled architecture and the magnificent choir rotunda. The interior with its seven domes is particularly fascinating, appearing surprisingly light and spacious. The baroque ornamentation and the delicate stucco work in the best rococo style give the church an elegant atmosphere. In addition to the pilgrimage church, you will also find a Lourdes grotto and a Dreikönigskapelle (Three Kings Chapel) – perfect places to let your soul relax and let the history sink in.

"...In addition to the Wittelsbach Castle, the St. Jakob Church is also worth seeing. Its predecessor dates back to the 13th century. The church tower was originally much higher (68 meters, to be precise) and had an onion dome. But the medieval foundations could not support it. As a result, the tower collapsed in 1868, damaging the central nave. Fortunately, no one was hurt..." "...The city wall of Friedberg was first built from stone in 1409 and had three city gates, none of which still exist. In addition to the wooden battlements, the city fortifications included four round towers at the corners and numerous defensive towers. Many of them still exist today and can be admired, such as the torture tower with its interrogation and torture room or the Red Water Tower, which was in use from 1888-1936. The name of most of the towers is based on the family names or the professions of their former residents: Gunsmith Tower, Bookbinder Tower or Council Servant Tower..." "...A special project in Friedberg is "The Memory of the Wall". On the western city wall hang 15 narrow, colorful flaps that look like mailboxes set into the wall. Lift the flaps and read the hidden messages. They remind us of historic moments in Friedberg in Bavaria..."
