THE POTTATAL The Pottatal probably got its name from the mining lessee Hans Podd, who tried to mine gold here in the 16th century. Small spoil heaps and pits in the valley bear witness to the old mining. The extraction was not very successful, and further information about the mining has not been preserved. Above the valley stood the café „Zoo am Berg", which was founded by the retired cavalry captain Julian Kreisel. The center of the area consisted of a log cabin, made from rough spruce logs, which was called „Old Shatterhand". It had been built in the Wild West style. The zoological garden had animals in cages and in free-range enclosures. In the early fifties, the area burned down and the zoo was not renewed. In the year 2000, the valley was made accessible on the initiative of Bäderwälder through the construction of wooden bridges and walkways. Source: Information board at the location

The Wolfspinge is a collapsed historic ore mine just below the summit of the Plattenberg. A fascinating geo- and biotope (together with the neighboring Eispinge)

In winter, or when the paths are icy and slippery, this railing is absolutely worth its weight in gold. It definitely gave me the security I needed when descending so I didn't slip.
