Nice little place, but very crowded. You should try to get there by bus or with several people in one vehicle, as parking is limited.

This trail is neither particularily difficult, nor dangerous - it is just a normal high difficulty trail that includes narrow vertigo sections, can be slippery due to small stones, and sometimes hard to find. None of these things are particularily unique. The problem with this trail is that it is accessible straight from one of Tenerife’s largest resort areas, and thus it can be easily accessed by a large number of people who are completely out of their depth. This is not a casual afternoon stroll! You need equipment, like proper walking shoes, and you need to be free of vertigo, and you have to have some route finding skills.

This trail should be closed. We like challenging hikes. But this one is potentially life-threatening. Twice, the trail was completely lost, and we had to climb down the gorge on the scree. I was on the trail for 10 hours, including about 45 minutes in Tamaimo for a snack. I was so annoyed that there was no trail, and turning back wasn't really an option. This circular trail should be closed.

8/8/25: I walked the path yesterday, a good 3 km to just before the tunnel entrance, which I was looking for but couldn't find, so I retraced my steps. The "path" is the width of a dirt track and is unmarked. In some places, where you have to climb over stones/rocks, it's difficult to find, and there are several places where the path is buried under scree. In many places, the path slopes more or less vertically up one side and down the other. You should definitely not walk here: (i) alone (ii) in very hot temperatures (little shade) (iii) if you're afraid of heights, or (iv) if the stones might be even slightly slippery.

Beautiful hiking trails, some of which are difficult. We started our circular hike in Masca. Masca itself is a bit overrun by tourists, but otherwise very beautiful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some of the most popular canyons to explore around Santiago Del Teide?

The region offers several impressive canyons. The most famous is undoubtedly Masca Village, which serves as a starting point for the dramatic Masca Canyon trek. Another notable spot is Cañada de la Camilleta, known for its spectacular cliff walls and unique volcanic formations. For a more challenging experience, Barranco del Aderno offers a demanding hiking trail with steep ascents.

Are there any regulations or permits required for hiking in the canyons, especially Masca?

Yes, the Barranco de Masca trail was reopened after safety improvements and is now regulated. Visitors must book tickets in advance, and trekking is often limited to weekends. Specific equipment, including appropriate footwear and helmets, is required and checked before entry. For other canyons, it's always advisable to check local regulations, especially within the Teno Rural Park.

What is the best time of year to visit the canyons around Santiago Del Teide?

The canyons in Santiago Del Teide can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time for hiking is typically during the cooler, drier months from autumn to spring (October to May). Summers can be very hot, making long hikes more challenging. Always check the weather forecast before heading out, as conditions can change rapidly, especially in mountainous terrain.

Are there family-friendly canyon trails in the area?

While many canyons in Santiago Del Teide offer challenging terrain, some sections or viewpoints can be enjoyed by families. For instance, the general area around Masca Village offers scenic views and a charming atmosphere, though the full Masca descent is strenuous. For easier walks, consider exploring the outskirts of the canyons or coastal paths nearby.

What kind of natural features can I expect to see in these canyons?

You will encounter dramatic V-shaped gorges with immense, sheer rock walls, some hundreds of meters high. The landscape is characterized by volcanic formations, unique flora, and sometimes water canals or small orchards. Highlights like Cañada de la Camilleta showcase spectacular volcanic landscapes and cliff walls.

What outdoor activities can I do near the canyons of Santiago Del Teide?

Beyond canyon exploration, the region offers diverse outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, including moderate to difficult routes like the 'View of Teide from PR TF-51 Trail' or the 'Santiago del Teide to Chinyero loop'. There are also challenging MTB trails and mountain hikes available, such as the 'View of Los Gigantes' loops.

Is Barranco Seco accessible, and what does it offer?

Barranco Seco offers a more secluded experience, primarily known for its tranquil, unspoiled beach of gravel and dark sand. Access is difficult on foot, often requiring a hike through the ravine, or by boat from Puerto Los Gigantes. The hike through the ravine can be challenging, with a 'key section' secured by a wire rope, making it suitable for adventurous hikers seeking tranquility and stunning natural beauty.

What makes Barranco de Los Carrizales a unique canyon experience?

Barranco de Los Carrizales provides a wilder, more rugged hiking experience compared to the more famous Masca. Located in the Teno Mountains, it's appreciated for its unspoiled nature and offers challenging hikes with steep, narrow trails. It's an excellent choice for experienced hikers looking for remote exploration and panoramic views of the Teno Mountains, the Atlantic Ocean, and even Mount Teide.

What should I wear and bring for canyon hiking in Santiago Del Teide?

Appropriate footwear with good grip is essential. For regulated trails like Masca, helmets are required and often provided. It's advisable to wear comfortable, layered clothing suitable for varying temperatures, and bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a first-aid kit. For more challenging routes, trekking poles can be beneficial.

Are there any historical or cultural points of interest near the canyons?

Yes, Masca Village itself is a significant attraction, with its charming 18th-century chapel and traditional Canarian architecture. Historically, the Barranco de Masca was also used as a hiding place by pirates. Exploring the villages nestled within the Teno mountains offers a glimpse into the region's past.

What do visitors enjoy most about the canyons around Santiago Del Teide?
