Mountain Hikes around Algund - Lagundo
Just a few minutes' walk from the center of Lana, a completely different world opens up: the Gaul Gorge at the foot of the castle hill of Braunsberg Castle. Steep rocky slopes rise up on both sides, the river Falschauer babbles over the stony stream bed and even in midsummer the temperatures between the cool rock walls are pleasantly cool. Completely different types of rock come together here: between the quartz porphyry and the primary rock of the Old Gneisse, there is also a narrow strip of granite. Only a narrow strip of land between the massive rocks leads over the unspoiled mountain stream. From the Gaulwiese, a well-secured path leads over suspension bridges, past a roaring waterfall, further into the wildly romantic and increasingly narrow gorge; or up to Braunsberg Castle with a beautiful view over Lana.

Tour is recommended from the Texelbahn to Unterstellbahn, since it is less uphill. The bridges rock up if anyone's scared. There are now two of them.

While Algund - Lagundo may not feature deep, dramatic canyons in the traditional sense, the surrounding Texel Group Nature Park offers impressive natural formations. Key attractions include the spectacular Partschins Waterfall, where water plunges nearly 100 meters, and the scenic Waalwege, historic irrigation channel trails that sometimes traverse gorge-like landscapes. You can also explore specific gorge sections like the Gorge of the 1,000 Steps.
The Partschins Waterfall is considered one of the most impressive waterfalls in the Alps, with water thundering 97 to 98 meters down a vertical rock face. During snowmelt (May to July), it's particularly powerful, creating a spectacular display. The air around it is also believed to have invigorating effects due to high concentrations of active oxygen ions, beneficial for respiratory health.
Waalwege are historic irrigation channel trails, built centuries ago to water fields and vineyards. They are largely level, making them popular for leisurely walks suitable for all ages and fitness levels. You can expect picturesque views of vineyards, apple orchards, and forests, often with continuous vistas of Algund, Merano, and the surrounding mountains. The sound of flowing water is a constant companion, and they offer a unique blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty.
Yes, there are several impressive suspension bridges that offer unique perspectives of the gorges. Notable ones include the Suspension Bridge in the 1,000 Steps Gorge, which makes hiking through the gorge easier, and the Suspension Bridge on the Merano High Mountain Trail, connecting two sections of the famous Meraner Höhenweg with notable views. The Suspension Bridges of Gaulschlucht also provide easy access to a waterfall.
The gorge trails offer rewarding views into the Adige Valley and Vinschgau Valley, especially from challenging routes like the Gorge of the 1,000 Steps. From the Waalwege, you'll enjoy panoramic vistas of Algund, Merano, and the surrounding mountains, often through vineyards and orchards. The Partschins Waterfall area provides dramatic views of the water plunging into the Zieltal valley.
Absolutely. The Waalwege are particularly suitable for families due to their largely level paths. The Gilf Promenade is ideal for a walk, even with children, and is stroller-friendly in parts. The Suspension Bridges of Gaulschlucht are also easily accessible for everyone, including small children and prams, offering a nice short detour to a waterfall.
The difficulty varies. The Waalwege offer easy, almost flat paths suitable for all ages. However, trails like the Gorge of the 1,000 Steps are considered challenging, featuring stone, wooden, and metal steps along steep slopes. Other routes involving suspension bridges, such as the Suspension Bridge on the Merano High Mountain Trail, are typically intermediate.
The Partschins Waterfall is particularly impressive during the snowmelt season, typically from May to July, when up to 10,000 liters of water per second thunder down. Due to the mild climate, many Waalwege can be walked almost year-round, offering pleasant conditions for leisurely hikes. Generally, spring, summer, and autumn provide excellent weather for exploring the region's natural attractions.
The Partschins Waterfall is situated within the Texel Group Nature Park and can be reached by a scenic hike from Algund. Various hiking paths, including a route from the Texelbahn cableway, lead to the waterfall. A short, safe track leads to an observation platform for close-up views at the foot of the waterfall.
