Very nice day with nice obstacles. Luckily no mountain bikers and amphibians in the stream that don't get run over

The rustic gorge, which is located in the side valley of the Rode Valley, is worth a visit and gives you the feeling of being in a natural jungle. However, the narrow hiking trail is muddy after rainfall. Sturdy shoes are recommended!

Beautiful and currently very exciting to see how the water masses from the heavy rain in the summer have transformed the valley. The bottom line is that it remains a mystery to me why the two valleys are so neglected. Officially there are still (or lying...) closure signs around. Today the village of Laubach organized a medium-sized hiking event ("Hiking with others"), the routes offered were all on the gravel roads (which are currently in great condition due to the expansion of the power line) and neither through the Grundbachtal nor through the Glasebachtal. Why is that? Why don't we take care of these natural treasures and instead let people "hike" on paths where heavy-duty trucks drive on weekdays?

Beautiful, wild and romantic hike. However, the path is not maintained. We had to cross at least 8 fallen trees and after a week of rain the trail was very muddy. Still worth it!

Among the most popular gorges are Mackenröder Cliffs, known for its interesting geological formations and shifting terrain. Visitors also highly rate Niemetal, a wonderfully shady stream valley with well-signposted paths, and Grundbach Valley, a beautiful brook valley that offers a great hiking trail along the creek.
Yes, the Grundbach Valley is a good option, featuring multiple stream crossings and a rest area, making it enjoyable for families. The rest area in Grundbachtal is specifically noted as family-friendly.
The region is rich in geological interest. At Mackenröder Cliffs, you can see terrain in motion, with material breaking off from the steep face due to the underlying red sandstone becoming mushy when wet. The Weißwassertal Sandstone Cliffs also showcase interesting rock formations made of red sandstone.
Yes, several gorges offer more challenging routes. The path along the Mackenröder Cliffs is interspersed with roots and small slopes, requiring concentration. Other challenging options include the Eschental Gorge, Smugglers' Gorge, and Steinbachtal.
The gorges around Göttingen can be enjoyed throughout the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and vibrant foliage, while summer provides shady retreats in stream valleys like Niemetal. Even in rainy weather, places like Weißwassertal are recommended for observing amphibians.
Yes, in the Grundbach Valley, there is a nice rest area with a table at the end of the trail. In Weißwassertal, you can refill good water at the Hördelbrunnen.
While the gorges feature rivers and streams like the Weißwasserbach in Weißwassertal and the Grundbach in Grundbach Valley, specific designated wild swimming spots are not explicitly mentioned. These areas are primarily for hiking and enjoying the natural scenery.
The region offers diverse outdoor activities. You can find numerous road cycling routes, such as the 'Well-Maintained Bike Path – Kiessee, Göttingen loop' or the 'Wendebach Reservoir loop'. For mountain biking, explore trails like 'Kerstlingeröder Field – Mackenröder Cliffs loop'. Additionally, there are touring bicycle routes, including the 'Loop along the Weser' and the 'Leine Cycle Path loop'. You can find more details on these activities in the Road Cycling Routes around Göttingen, MTB Trails around Göttingen, and Cycling around Göttingen guides.
Given the varied terrain, including roots and slopes in areas like Mackenröder Cliffs and stream crossings in Grundbach Valley, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are recommended. Layered clothing is advisable to adapt to changing weather conditions, and waterproof gear might be useful, especially if exploring during or after rain.
While popular spots are well-known, the Bratetal offers an intermediate trail with viewpoints, and the Smugglers' Gorge provides a challenging and immersive forest experience that might appeal to those seeking a less-traveled path.
Visitors appreciate the diverse natural landscapes, from the unique geological formations of Mackenröder Cliffs to the idyllic stream valleys like Niemetal. The well-signposted paths, opportunities for peaceful walks, and the chance to observe nature, even amphibians in places like Weißwassertal, are frequently highlighted.
