At the Godehardbrücke northwest of Göttingen's main train station, the Leine river shows itself from two sides. South of the bridge, it meanders in a winding course with shallow gravel areas, while north of it, it flows through a straight, simple flood channel. The near-natural southern section was made possible by a renaturation, during which bank reinforcements were removed and gravel and reed areas were created. The banks and island are now densely vegetated. In May, wide areas glow yellow with blooming watercress, and in summer, cattails and reeds shape the scenery. North of the bridge, the Leine Canal, which serves to drain Göttingen's city center, also flows back into the Leine.
