Nice place to jog as there are trees along most of the trail to provide shade and a wind barrier. The trail itself is mostly packed dirt or gravel and a loop is 1.5 miles around making it a nice place to train for the 5K, 10K and Half Marathon distances.

The name of this lake is no coincidence; it's named for Mount Trashmore, which from this perspective you can see rising above the opposite shore. This 60-foot-tall "mountain" was created by compacting solid waste and clean soil. There's also a paved trail that goes all the way around the perimeter park, and a series of fitness stations you can use to get a great workout.

June 26, 2024, Chesapeake Beach

Chic's Beach, Chix Beach, and Chesapeake Beach are all the same, so don't be confused if you see all three mentioned in town. No matter what you call it the relatively calm waters are great for kayaking, swimming, and paddleboarding. The area is also less well known than nearby Virginia Beach so you can expect things to be a little quieter and less crowded.

There are wonderful ways to enjoy nature. The building for the main natural area was closed when we arrived, so we were only able to check out the park. The park was fine. No public toilets and hardly anyone there.

What are the Norfolk Broads and how are they different from typical lakes?

The Norfolk Broads are a unique network of interconnected navigable lakes and rivers in Eastern England, often referred to as a National Park. They are largely man-made, resulting from medieval peat digging, and offer a diverse wetland ecosystem rather than being natural lakes.

Which Broads are best for wildlife spotting and birdwatching?

For exceptional wildlife spotting, Hickling Broad is a significant nature reserve known for common cranes, kingfishers, the rare swallowtail butterfly, marsh harriers, and the elusive bittern. Horsey Mere is also internationally important for birds like wigeon, teal, and shoveller, while South Walsham Broad offers sightings of bitterns, grebes, and otters.

Are there accessible walking trails around the Norfolk Broads?

Yes, several Broads offer accessible options. Barton Broad features a fully accessible boardwalk that leads through woodland to a viewing platform. Salhouse Broad has a wheelchair-friendly Boardwalk Trail, and Filby Broad provides wheelchair-accessible fishing platforms and boardwalks.

What family-friendly activities can we do at the Norfolk lakes?

Are there any lakes with unique natural features or ecosystems?

The Norfolk Broads themselves are a unique wetland landscape. Barton Broad is notable for its clear water quality due to environmental restoration. Horsey Mere's reed beds and grazing marshes are an internationally important habitat for various bird species.

What is special about the Trinity Broads?

The Trinity Broads, which include Filby Broad, Ormesby, and Rollesby Broads, are 'landlocked' and not connected to the main Broads network. This isolation results in particularly clear water quality, making them distinct from other Broads.
