Rulhe Refuge

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Rulhe refuge is like a spaceship placed in the middle of the mountains. In a most picturesque setting, the landscape combines mountains with sharp peaks and waterfalls with piercing sounds. Settle in to enjoy the panorama of the tapering ridges which, to the south, serve as a natural border with Andorra.

The refuge is located at the confluence of several hiking trails such as the famous GR 10 or the GRP® tour of the Montagnes d'Ax. It is open from the end of May to the end of September without interruption, and in winter by reservation. The caretaker offers overnight accommodation and catering. Do not hesitate to contact him beforehand to ensure availability.

En Beys Refuge

Highlight • Restaurant

The En Beys refuge which overlooks the eponymous ponds culminates at an altitude of 1,970 meters, in the heart of the Orlu national reserve. Situated on the great GR 7 which connects the Vosges to the Pyrenees, the refuge remains an excellent detour for the GRP® tour of the Ax Mountains or Tour des Pérics.

In a warm and family setting, the refuge guardians offer 70 beds in high season as well as a complete catering offer. In winter, 15 places remain freely accessible, accessible through the window at the top of the ladder which fits on one of the walls of the building.

The refuge is an ideal place to observe the burning of the granite walls of the Pics Rouges at sunset, or the galloping chamois in the snowfields in the early morning. If you wish to extend your stay for one night, do not hesitate to contact the refuge on 05 61 64 24 24 to find out about opening dates and bed availability.

Pinet Refuge

Highlight • Mountain Hut

"The house by the lake..."
Beautifully situated hut on the ascent path from the L'Artigue parking lot to several peaks, including Pic du Montcalm and Pica d'Estats (I also included the somewhat more difficult Pic de Sotllo, hence my photos here as a "highlight" of mountain hiking).
The hut was already out of service in October 2024, but there was a winter room with approximately 14 beds. A cash register awaits a deposit of €8 per night.

Very nice loop hike made last week from the power station but watch out for the last snowfields.

Cabane du Mourgouillou

Highlight • Mountain Hut

On the road to Mérens-les-Vals, the Mourgouillou hut is your last stop. It stands in an idyllic environment, ideal for taking a last break before Mérens-les-Vals.

The small stone construction pierced with a door and a window is basic but has the essentials for a successful break. There is a fireplace and a side wall on which up to four people can sleep head to tail. For water and wood, the surrounding streams and woods provide the necessary.

Your break is over, you only have one hour of downhill walking to reach Mérens-les-Vals.

September 4, 2025, Refuge du Rulhe

There was good vegetarian food and a delicious dessert. Hot showers are available until 6 p.m. There's no real drying room. If the hut is full and all the hikers have to dry their shoes by the fireplace, expect to have to wear wet clothes and shoes the next morning. Unfortunately, there was only one used newspaper for over 50 pairs of wet shoes 🤷

Very beautiful and photogenic lakes in a high valley, accessible only by long hikes/climbing. Therefore, they are not as crowded as the reservoir in the valley below. You'll often need your hands on the descent from the eponymous peak, Pic d'Étang Fourcat.

Conveniently located hut for those who want to take the technically easiest, but with 2,000 meters of elevation gain, longest climb from the parking lot at L'Artigue to the peaks of Pic du Montcalm, Pica d'Estats, and Pic de Sotllo. The hut was already closed when I climbed in mid-October, but a winter room with approximately 14 beds was open. There's a cash register at the entrance, charging €8 per night.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of mountain huts are available in Ariège?

Ariège offers a variety of mountain huts, broadly categorized into two types: guarded refuges (refuges gardés) and unguarded huts (refuges non gardés or cabanes). Guarded refuges typically provide services like meals, beds, and a warden, usually open from late June to September. Unguarded huts are basic shelters, often without staff or running water, requiring hikers to be self-sufficient.

Which huts are known for their stunning views and natural surroundings?

Many huts in Ariège boast incredible natural settings. For example, the Rulhe Refuge is set amidst sharp mountain peaks and powerful waterfalls. The En Beys Refuge overlooks its namesake ponds within the Orlu national reserve, offering views of granite walls at sunset. The Les Estagnous Refuge provides breathtaking views of the Pic de la Pale de la Claouère and nearby ponds.

Are there huts suitable for multi-day treks and long-distance trails?

Yes, several huts serve as key stops on multi-day treks. The Rulhe Refuge is a hub for the GR10 and the Tour des montagnes d'Ax. The En Beys Refuge is an excellent detour for the GRP® tour of the Ax Mountains or the Tour des Pérics, and is situated on the GR 7. The Bassiès Refuge is a good stop on the GR10 trail between Aulus-les-Bains and Auzat. The Etang d'Araing Refuge is also a stop on the HRP (Haute Randonnée Pyrénéenne) and GR10.

Which huts are ideal for mountaineers aiming for higher summits?

For mountaineers, the Pinet Refuge is a gateway to various peaks of the Montcalm massif. The Etang Fourcat Refuge, located at 2,445 meters, is conveniently situated for those attempting challenging climbs to peaks like Pic du Montcalm, Pica d'Estats, and Pic de Sotllo.

What services can I expect at guarded refuges in Ariège?

Guarded refuges in Ariège typically offer a higher level of comfort and services. These include sleeping facilities with mattresses and blankets, catering with homemade meals, and a warden who can provide local route and weather advice. Some, like the Bassiès Refuge, even allow for bivouacking on surrounding lawns with tent and mattress rentals.

When is the best time to visit huts in Ariège?

Guarded refuges are generally open during the summer months, roughly from late May or June to late September. Some may also open in winter by reservation. Unguarded huts are accessible year-round, but require self-sufficiency. For cultural events, the Les Estagnous Refuge hosts entertainment evenings in July and August.

Are there any huts that are easily accessible or suitable for beginners?

The Rulhe Refuge, at 2,185 meters, is considered one of the most accessible refuges in Ariège. The Refuge du Chioula, situated at 1,600 meters above Ax-les-Thermes, is also noted for its accessibility, reachable by foot in summer and snowshoes or cross-country skis in winter.

What kind of outdoor activities can I do near these huts?

The huts in Ariège are excellent bases for various outdoor activities. You can find numerous waterfall hikes, mountain hikes, and running trails nearby. Many routes pass by lakes, offer panoramic views, and provide opportunities for challenging climbs or more moderate excursions.

What should I know about staying in unguarded huts (cabanes) in Ariège?

Unguarded huts, or cabanes, offer basic shelter, often with mattresses and blankets, but without staff, meals, or running water. They are ideal for those seeking solitude and a rustic experience. You must be self-sufficient, bringing all your own food, water, and gear. These simple stone structures were historically used by shepherds and provide emergency shelter or a place for experienced hikers to spend the night.

What do visitors particularly enjoy about the huts in Ariège?

Visitors appreciate the warm welcome and quality cuisine at many guarded refuges, such as the En Beys Refuge and Bassiès Refuge. The stunning panoramic views, picturesque settings, and the opportunity to observe wildlife like chamois are also frequently highlighted. The availability of hot showers and good vegetarian food at places like Rulhe Refuge adds to the positive experience.

Do I need to make reservations for huts in Ariège?

It is highly recommended to reserve in advance for guarded refuges, especially during peak season (summer months). This ensures availability and allows the warden to prepare for your arrival. For unguarded huts, reservations are not possible, but it's crucial to be prepared with appropriate gear, food, and water.
