Manfredian Fortress (Brisighella)

Highlight • Castle

It stands on one of the three chalky pinnacles that dominate the village. Built in 1310 by the Manfredi, lords of Faenza, it remained in this family until 1500, when it passed to Cesare Borgia for only three years.
From 1503 to 1509 it belonged to the Venetians who built the grandiose keep and two sides of the walls, then it was part of the Papal State. At the end of 1500 the two towers were covered with a roof.
The fortress still retains the characteristics of medieval fortresses: the holes for the chains of the drawbridges above the entrance door, the corbels and machicolations, the walkways on the surrounding walls, the loopholes.

Today restored to new splendor through continuous and qualified restorations, it is a valuable example of the military art of the Middle Ages.

The fortress is also known as Rocca Manfrediana

Colonia di Castel Raniero

Highlight • Historical Site

The Colony of Castel Raniero and its park have an unparalleled environmental and architectural value: the Art Nouveau building (dating back to 1928) stands in the middle of an area of enormous landscape value. From here you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views over the city of Faenza. It has not been used since the end of 1984 and has been abandoned

Oriolo Tower

Highlight • Castle

Oriolo dei Fichi is a small inhabited center located on the first foothills of the Romagna Apennines: about ten kilometers south-east of Faenza with an altitude of 141m above sea level.
The surrounding area, scattered with ancient farmhouses, is mainly cultivated with vines and arable land that alternate with wooded slopes.

The first evidence of the place comes from the distant 898 AD. when a certain Aghinolfo was a lord.
In 1017, the Emperor Henry II assigned it to Arnaldo II, Archbishop of Ravenna.
Forty years later, it was the latter who built a castle that, throughout the Middle Ages, was disputed between the lords of Faenza, Forlì and the Ravenna Church, its legitimate owner.

Starting from 1300 and up to 1689, Oriolo enjoyed the status of a Rural Municipality: while remaining under the control of those who owned the castle, it meant being endowed with a certain administrative autonomy.
At the time, the territory of the Municipality of Oriolo had an approximate area of 5-6 sq km and included three parishes.

The population numbered about 500 people who subsequently decreased to the current 200.
From those ancient times, the fifteenth-century tower remains today: perched on top of a slope and surrounded by a small park owned by the municipality of Faenza.

Rocca Sforzesca di Bagnara

Highlight • Castle

Throughout the Romagna plain, Bagnara is a rare example of a fully preserved medieval castrum.
The entire defensive system that includes the Sforza fortress, the boundary wall and the moat is perfectly visible even today. The keep is considered by many scholars to be one of the best 15th century fortification works of art in Italy.

Rocca Estense di Lugo

Highlight • Castle

Sources tell us of a first fortified nucleus as early as the 10th century ...
The sources also tell us that the Faentines destroyed the fortress in 1218 and from this moment on it was rebuilt several times and at different times until the fourteenth century.
... the name Rocca Estense reflects the period of its maximum flowering, i.e. under the Este domination, from 1437 to 1598. In fact, the most significant changes to the fortress date back to this period.
Ercole I d'Este transformed the parade ground into a citadel by equipping it with a wall, towers and a moat to defend it. Subsequently, Duke Alfonso II d'Este had the citadel demolished and used the resulting materials to build the ramparts on the south, east and west sides. Following these interventions, the Rocca changed its appearance assuming the form of a bastioned fortress typical of the late sixteenth century.
With the passage to the Papal State, the Rocca lost its castle characteristics. The creation of a Hanging Garden is the main modification of this period which can be dated to the end of the 18th century. It is a suggestive place today accessible through the internal courtyard of the Rocca.

The castle of Rontana, unfortunately destroyed, stood on the top of Monte di Rontana and is remembered for the first time in 973 with Ugone di Rontana [23].
Over the centuries, the fortification belonged, in succession: to the Forlivesi (1201), to the Faenza (1209), to the Manfredi (1291), to Maghinardo Pagani (1292), to the Manfredi di Marradi (1413), alternatively to the Manfredi and the Holy See (during the fourteenth century).
In 1500 it was conquered by Dionigi Naldi on behalf of Cesare Borgia; in 1506 it belonged to the Venetians, and then returned again to the Papal State.
In 1591 Pope Gregory XIV ordered its demolition, having become the refuge of a large band of brigands.
Since then, the castle has never been rebuilt and today only a few ruins remain.

Castellaccio di Pietramora

Highlight • Castle

The castle is easily reached by a gravel road that branches off from the provincial road, but there are no indications and you need to check the map. These are the ruins of a castle built in the 9th century by the lineage of the Guidi counts and destroyed in 1190. The walls now enclose a park of pylons with telecommunications antennas. The southern wall is a cliff made up of the typical spur, a partially calcareous rock; a narrow and exposed path allows you to visit some caves that open in the rock. Be very careful, because the path, although short, is dangerous.
