Their history often dates back a whole century, as many of the war memorials / monuments were erected in the (later so-called) interwar period. They thus originated between the two world wars, which brought infinite suffering and horror to soldiers and civilians in the first half of the last century. And yet their dual message – namely, on the one hand, to remember the victims of that time, but at the same time to be a constant and eternal warning for peace – is still relevant today. After the Angelus prayer, in view of the military conflicts in many countries around the world, the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, said a few months ago: “I follow with concern the news about the attacks that continue to [claim] numerous dead and injured.” and issued the following appeal: “We must not get used to war and destruction! Let us pray together for a just and lasting peace.”

A truly beautiful stretch along the Schnelle Havel River—a highlight especially for birdwatchers. The meadow path becomes somewhat overgrown in places in summer. Wear long pants, and don't forget to check yourself for ticks afterward! There is exactly one swimming spot along this stretch. Swimming is recommended at other locations to protect nature.

Swimming is expressly permitted at this point on the Schnelle Havel. There's a small natural beach and benches here. However, please be aware of the wildlife living in the surrounding reeds and behave with caution.
