Manning Park dates back to 1856 when Charles Manning established a farm here that grew into a large family estate stretching from North Lake to Coogee. Two Manning family homes once stood by the lake: Davilak House, built in the 1840s and lost to a fire in 1960, with its stone ruins still visible today, and a second home built in the early 1900s for daughter Azelia Ley, which is now the heritage-listed Azelia Ley Homestead Museum. These days, it’s a well-used park centred around the lake, with old tuart trees, open lawns, playgrounds, and barbecues, along with all its rich history.

Manning Lake is the centrepiece of Manning Park, set within the wider Beeliar Regional Park with a long history. In the Nyungar language, it was originally called Dgilgie’s Lake, later renamed Devil’s Lake by settlers. According to local legend, it was then pronounced Davilak by Aboriginal people, a name it carried for years before becoming Manning Lake. Old tuart trees and swamp paperbark still line the shore, which are now rare in Cockburn.

Woodman Point Regional Park is a 54-hectare coastal reserve at Coogee with a layered history. It was once a failed settlement, a quarantine station, and an explosives reserve, with the former munitions magazines and quarantine station now listed on the State Register of Heritage Places. These days it’s a popular spot for coastal walking, with paths winding through the park’s bushland and along the shoreline, picnic areas, beaches, and beautiful views out over Cockburn Sound and Owen Anchorage.

Woodman Point is the headland that gives the regional park its name, extending out into the Indian Ocean with Owen Anchorage to the north and Jervoise Bay to the south. Whadjuk people are recognised as the traditional owners of the point and the surrounding country, and today, it’s a favourite spot for shore-based fishing and is a fantastic place for a walk, with coastal paths winding along the shoreline and views back across the water toward Coogee and Fremantle.

Woodman Point Jetty, also known locally as the Ammo Jetty for its history as the old ammunition jetty dating back to the early 1900s, extends about 100 metres out from the shore. Underneath the jetty, there is a sheltered stretch of reef and a seagrass meadow that provides habitat for a variety of fish and other marine life, making it a popular snorkelling and scuba diving spot. It’s also a great place to walk to the end and take in the views across the Cockburn Sound, especially if you’re here at sunset.
