Charlie Cosh
March 28, 2026, Ruskin's View

This view was painted by the artist Turner in 1822. Subsequently in 1875 a well known social critic of the time, John Ruskin, wrote ‘I do not know in all my country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine.’. As such the view became known as "Ruskin's View".

Various shops around the square, including a well stocked sweet shop if that's what you need. Lovely chips from Jingling Lane chippy, immediately next to the square.

The market square with its impressive monument in the middle is still being used as a weekly market on Thursdays. Apparently this square has been used as a market since the 13th Century.
