Devil's Bridge Over the River Lune

Highlight • Viewpoint

Kirkby Lonsdale is a pretty little town often missed by the public as they skirt it on the A65. Lots of little shops and cafes around the market place and welcoming of bike riders. Well worth a break.

Devil's Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale

Highlight • Historical Site

Nice views. Apparently, there is no record of it ever been built - so it was assumed the Devil built it 🙃. We used to jump off it in younger days, there are now 'bylaw' signs which prohibit it. There is also a burger van if you fancy something to eat or a brew. Massively popular with motorbikers on weekends and in good weather. Free car park opposite from which to start your ride.

Highlight (Segment) • River

Very nice footpath which follows alongside the River Lune.

Radical Steps

Highlight • Trail

A step path leading from the churchyard down to the River Lune. The steps were built in 1820 for Dr Francis Pearson, who had a reputation as a political radical, to divert the existing public footpath that ran through his garden! There was a lot of opposition to the building of steps, which thereafter became locally known as the "Radical Steps".
Not the most even of steps so be careful when descending.

St Mary's Church, Kirkby Lonsdale

Highlight • Religious Site

A very attractive and historic church dating back to the 12th century. Worth a look inside.

Kirkby Lonsdale Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

The market square with its impressive monument in the middle is still being used as a weekly market on Thursdays. Apparently this square has been used as a market since the 13th Century.

Turned my watch off at the Kirby Lonsdale brewery as I won't be walking very far from here 😄🍻 #theroyalbarn
A great stop off driving across to the Lake District for 2 days of hiking. The town is an architectural gem, the riverside and ancient Devils Bridge. Lots of coffee houses and places to eat, bakers, brewery tap and pubs. Love it.
Kirkby Lonsdale is a beautiful small town sitting just above the River Lune. This walk takes in the churchyard and the Radical steps followed by a beautiful stretch along the River Lune.
