The Levada dos Tornos is impassable from the waterfall junction towards Camacha due to a landslide. It is passable from the direction of Gaula as far as the waterfalls; from there, a detour can be made northwards via the waterfalls. (The image position isn't quite right, but Komoot won't allow repositioning...)

The levada tunnel leads you deep through the mountain, while beside you the water flows quietly in the narrow channel. In the cool, damp darkness, your footsteps echo – a headlamp, caution, and the occasional duck are essential here. At the exit, you blink back into the daylight and are usually rewarded with fresh views of green slopes, valleys, and the surrounding mountain landscape.

After a short while, you'll hear the gentle babbling of the levada and find yourself immersed in a mix of gardens, eucalyptus, and laurel forests. This is a good moment to check your backpack and shoes before you begin your leisurely, mostly level levada hike.

The Levada do Caniço hiking trail leads you almost level along an irrigation canal above the south coast, past gardens, terraces, and small houses. Views of Caniço, the coast, and the Atlantic Ocean open up again and again, while you stroll through shady sections of forest. The easily walkable, but occasionally narrow, path is ideal for a leisurely walk with sea views and requires only a little attention at a few unsecured sections.
