Tips from the Community

Matthew
July 13, 2023, Windsor Lake

Windsor Lake is a really popular hiking destination just outside of Leadville, Colorado, but it can work well as a shorter run, too (or an addition to a longer run). After a short, steep climb, you are rewarded with access to two alpine lakes (one small pool and one larger) situated right at treeline (a little over 11,600 feet). While fairly short, the trail to the lake is not the easiest and feels longer than the distance implies.

The road going over Independence Pass (and thus connecting Aspen and Twin Lakes) is only open certain times of the year due to heavy snowfall. The 32 mile paved road travels up to 12,000 feet and offers views along the way. This viewpoint overlooks the Twin Lakes area and Buffalo Peaks Wilderness in the background; the other direction offers views into the heart of the Sawatch Range.

This well marked trail loop journey through the woods and around the upper ponds. There are informational signs, bridges to cross, and benches just off the sides of the trail. This is still a singletrack trail with roots and rocks, but it is not one of the more challenging trails in the area.
