September 14, 2026, Chemainus River Estuary Trail

This flat trail follows a farm access road from the end of Swallowfield Road, passing fields, tidal sloughs and salt marsh before reaching the Chemainus River. Much of the route is open and exposed, so there’s little shade on hot days, and mosquitoes can be persistent around the wetlands. Expect roughly 4.5 kilometres out and back, with a few opportunities to branch off and explore closer to the estuary.

September 14, 2026, Chemainus River

The Chemainus River widens noticeably as it approaches the estuary, with tidal channels, marsh and exposed gravel banks shaping the lower stretches. It’s a good spot to pause and watch the water, with views towards Halalt Island and plenty of birdlife around the river margins. The river is also known for salmon and steelhead runs, although fishing restrictions vary by season, so current BC regulations are worth checking before casting.

Chemainus River Estuary is a broad mix of salt marsh, tidal flats and river channels where the river reaches the Salish Sea. Birdlife is the main draw, with waterfowl, shorebirds and raptors appearing through the seasons. The south side is reached from a small parking area at the end of Swallowfield Road, followed by a farm access road towards the marsh. It can be muddy after rain, and mosquitoes are common in warmer weather.

The woodland trails here to the north of Duncan make for a pleasant amble. Expect undulating, shaded trails and delightful fir trees. A short loop of the woodland's western end is popular or you can start from Mum's Park to the northeast and enjoy a longer hike.

This viewpoint gives you an epic panorama across Maple Bay. It's located along the Pink Trail which you can access via the Orange Trail, just be aware that the climb from sea level to the view point is steep so you may pause here for a while to catch your breath.

The trail follows a dike along the river with lookout points to Cowichan Bay. This is a popular birdwatching spot, and you can sometimes see other wildlife, including otters, in the estuary.
