Only the second half of this trail has shade, but it offers some one-of-a-kind views across Fish Creek Valley. There's the old uranium mine too, near the start of this segment (look for a little footpath leading to it), although the mine has been gated to keep out curious hikers — its unmaintained tunnels are not safe to explore.

The Ditch Trail (the southern portion of this loop) is a great, easy trail for a run, without any extreme elevation gain or loss. You'll get some pretty vistas, too, mixed in with the trees. The Soda Creek Trail, on the other hand, has a steep descent/climb at either end — great for making a loop if you want more of a challenge.

Although the parking lot is quite big, the trailhead fills up quickly especially when the aspens shimmer golden in late September. Check this webcam before you drive up to the Dry Lake Trailhead to find out if there are still lots available: share.earthcam.net/tJ90CoLmq7TzrY396Yd88PN-LGPG_7LcFwWSD6ItD3c!/steamboat_usda_forest_service_dry_lake_trailhead/camera/view_1 .

These falls are stunning, and the trail to this lookout is an easy warmup. Keep your wits about you, though — this is a very popular area, so you may have to weave in and out of the crowds. The farther you go up the trail the easier it'll be to keep up a run, even as the trail gets rougher.

Rumor has it that Mad Creek got its name from a person and his horse who tragically drowned in the nearby creek. This barn dates back to the early 1900s and underwent restoration in 2001.
