Obenstrohe Mill Pond The "Mill Pond" in Obenstrohe, a district of Varel on the Jade Bay, is an ancient forest lake in the Seghorn Forest. The "Mill Pond" used to be used as a recreational lake and rowing boats were used. Today, Varel sports fishermen look after the lake. A fish educational trail has also been created with information about flora and fauna. The beautiful circular hiking trails invite you to take walks at any time of year. Enjoy the peace and nature.

Relaxed through the city forest....

At the end of the Windallee are the stone pillars that show the entrance to the Varel Forest. The stone pillars at the entrance to the forest also symbolize the slogan "Varel - city between forest and sea". From the castle square you can already see the white gate and reach it quickly. The "stone pillars", which have been a motif for photographers and painters for many years, separate the city from the forest. The "Jungesholz forest adventure trail" begins there, which winds its way through the forest for about 3 km. In addition to the "Junges Holz" city forest, various forest areas in the individual districts of the city of Varel with a total area of over 1000 hectares belong to the Varel Forest. Detailed information: Until the end of the Bentinck rule in 1854, the forest was owned by the count, with the Windallee leading from the castle square directly to the "Große Allee" in the forest and both representing the bridle path for the count's rule. The "Stone Pillars", a motif for photographers and painters for many years.

The Varel windmill, which the last Count of Varel, Gustav Adolf von Bentinck, had built between 1847 and 1848, is a gallery Dutchman with a typical three-part structure made of a stone substructure, here a five-story substructure, the wooden construction of the "octagon" and the cap with the wings. It measures 29.80 meters to the tip of the cap and 39 meters to the tip of the upright wings. A pair of wings is 24 meters long. This makes the Varel windmill the second highest mill in Germany and one of the largest Dutch galleries ever. The mill was still in full operation until 1965. After its closure, the Varel city council decided to purchase the mill in 1972 in order to preserve it for posterity. After extensive renovation in 1973/1974, it was fully operational again and has since served as a museum mill, which is available to the Varel local history association for the exhibition of its local history collection.

If you drive through Varel, you can marvel at animal replicas made from scrap as works of art on the left and right of the path.

Several easy-to-drive paths lead through the Varel city forest. Unfortunately, you also have to realize that there are always attempts by unreasonable people to simply create wild trails in the forest ;-(
