The Church of São Domingos de Gusmão is located in the São Domingos neighborhood, in the municipality of Niterói, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It originated from a chapel dedicated to Saint Dominic of Guzman that was built in 1652 on the sugar plantation of Domingos Araújo and Violante do Céu Soares de Souza, an indigenous woman descended from Arariboia. In the 18th century, it received a Te Deum for the visit of João VI (r. 1816–1822) when he traveled to Vila da Praia Grande, and there the funeral rites of José Bonifácio were celebrated, whose heart is kept in an urn.[2] The foundation stone of the current church is dated 1898. In 1907, additions were made to the right side and the back. In 1929, the parish was created. In 1995, it was listed as a historical landmark by the city hall. The building is part of Niterói's tourist route and is considered a historical and architectural landmark. Its windbreak, in front of the main door, has a stained-glass window depicting Saint Dominic and Our Lady of the Rosary. Internally, it features ornamentation with Neo-Baroque, Neo-Romantic, and Neo-Gothic influences. Source: Wikipedia
