The oldest part of the monastery is in the Romanesque cellar. There is also an exhibition from the Ottonian period, and this is where you get the best impression of the early period.

March 26, 2024, View of Regenstein Castle

On a hill in Heers around 200 meters north of the Great Sand Caves there is a viewing point directly on the hiking trail with a view of the Regenstein castle ruins. The striking sandstone rock with the once important fortress structure is about 500 meters away from this location. Unfortunately, the increasingly lush vegetation now almost completely prevents an undisturbed view. This location is not so important for tourism that it would seem realistic to soon clear out the line of sight. That's why soon all that will be left of this viewpoint is the name - and a few out-of-place signs, which will confuse future hikers more than inform them.

Blankenburg Castle - the largest Welf Castle still preserved - is the landmark of the city of Blankenburg with a history going back more than 900 years. Today's palace complex emerged from medieval castle ruins and buildings from the Renaissance period. At the beginning of the 18th century, a baroque palace with representative European architecture was built on the “Blankenstein” for what was then the Guelph princely residence of Blankenburg. The baroque architecture has been largely preserved to this day. Source: https://www.rettung-schloss-blankenburg.de/
