The old gunpowder factory in Düneberg has existed since the late 19th century. Initially, it produced gunpowder, later also explosives for war. After 1945, the site was severely damaged. Because chemicals were used there for a long time, problems with the soil and groundwater persist to this day. In the late 1980s, more detailed investigations began. Some areas have been considered contaminated since then and require continued monitoring.

A beach without a sea. The wind-sculpted sand dunes in the Besenhorster Sandberge and Elbe Sand Meadows Nature Reserve are up to 20 meters high and crisscross the landscape east of Geesthacht. Pines and birch trees take root in the sandy soil, and plants normally found only on the coast grow among them.

Anyone who drives along here should be careful, it's a steep descent but the forest is very beautiful.
