Der wahrscheinlich um das Jahr 1390 aus Basaltquadern und Feldbrandsteinen erbaute Mühlenturm wurde bei seinem Bau als südwestlicher Eck- und Wehrturm der Stadtbefestigung Zons auch schon gleichzeitig als Turmwindmühle konzipiert. Nach neuesten Erkenntnissen war die Zonser Mühle bereits damals mit einer drehbaren, zipfelförmigen Haube und einem Innenkrühwerk ausgestattet. Zwischen 1688 und 1694 erfolgte ein großer Umbau der Mühle mit der Erweiterung des Innengetriebes um einen zweiten Mahlgang und mit dem Einbau eines Sackaufzuges, damit die früher von Hand geschleppten schweren Kornsäcke nun mittels Windkraft hochgezogen werden konnten. Um 1833 wurde die Mühle weiter ausgebaut zur so genannten „Holländer-Windmühle“, mit einem Außenkrühwerk versehen und um ein zusätzliches Geschoss zur heutigen konischen Form aufgestockt. Auch die dicken Mauern zum früheren finsteren Verlies im Erdgeschoss der Mühle wurden bei diesem Umbau von außen aufgebrochen und der Raum als Sacklager für das angelieferte Getreide genutzt. Die Mühle war bis 1907 noch voll in Betrieb. Nach der Zerstörung der Flügel durch einen schweren Sturm 1909 und dem Verfall bzw. Abbau von Steert und Galerie in den folgenden Jahren bestand der Mühlenturm über 40 Jahre nur noch als Torso, bis die Mühle 1965/1966 von der damaligen Stadt Zons restauriert und mit Anbringung der Flügel, der Galerie und dem Außenkrühwerk wieder in den alten Zustand versetzt wurde. Durch den Einbau eines Elektromotors konnten dann die Flügel zur touristischen Attraktion mit einem Münzeinwurf für einige Minuten gedreht werden (Leider z. Zt. wegen eines größeren Schadens an der Flügelwelle außer Betrieb) Seit der Stilllegung vor über 100 Jahren ist die gesamte innere Mühlentechnik mit Mahlwerk und Getriebe bis heute glücklicherweise unverändert erhalten geblieben. Nach verschiedenen Restaurierungsmaßnahmen zwischen 1983 und 2000 erfolgte in den Jahren 2009 bis 2011 eine umfassende Sanierung der Außen- und Innenmauern sowie des gesamten äußeren Holzständerwerkes und der Flügel. Zum Abschluss der Arbeiten wurde im ehemaligen Sacklager der Mühle ein kleines Mühlenmuseum eingerichtet.
