The former border tower near Hoyersburg is one of the most striking relics of the German division in the Altmark. It is located directly on the federal highway B248 between Salzwedel (Saxony-Anhalt) and Lüchow (Lower Saxony). The tower was part of the GDR border fortifications. In contrast to the simpler observation towers, the structure in Hoyersburg was a so-called command post (FüSt).

Salzwedel station was built in 1870 during the construction of the Stendal–Uelzen railway line and quickly developed into an important hub in the Altmark railway network. Six different railway lines ran from here in all directions, underscoring the town's economic and cultural importance. During World War II, the station was severely damaged in an air raid on February 22, 1945, killing approximately 300 people. The damage affected both the railway facilities and adjacent residential buildings. After the war and the division of Germany, the station lost its importance, but with reunification and the resumption of cross-border traffic, it experienced a renaissance. Today, Salzwedel station serves as a through station on the line between Uelzen and Stendal, connecting the town to important transport hubs.
