Along the path connecting the Union and Forth & Clyde Canals in Falkirk, there are several tile-designed benches that invite not only sitting but also taking a closer look. The project was a collaborative effort: Together with Scottish Canals, many local groups collaborated on this creative idea. The canal landscape was mapped and visualized, and the goal was to express how local people experience the environment and their heritage. Drawings and ideas were then transferred onto ceramics. Participating schools and groups were: - Safer Communities Youth Action Project - Carmuirs Primary - Easter Carmuirs Primary - Larbert Village Primary - Go Forth and Clyde

Very dark and wet - take a torch and be prepared for wet ground and some drips coming through the roof - unusual bit to walk through and worth doing though. Was a much longer tunnel than I was expecting.

Definitely. A great option that takes you through a unique feature is the Falkirk Tunnel loop from Arnothill. This moderate walk follows the canal towpath and offers a different perspective on the local landscape.
Most trails in the area are suitable for dogs, especially in open parklands like The Helix and Callendar Park. However, when walking through nature reserves like Carron Glen, it's important to keep your dog on a lead to protect the local wildlife.
For an easy and engaging walk with children, consider the The Kelpies – The Kelpies sculptures loop from Carronshore. The paths are generally flat and the giant sculptures provide a fantastic point of interest for all ages. The nearby Helix park also has a play zone and café.
For impressive scenery, head to Carron Glen Wildlife Reserve. It's a beautiful woodland set within a steep gorge carved by the River Carron. The paths offer striking views, but be aware that some sections can be steep and occasionally closed due to landslips.
Yes, many routes explore the region's industrial past. The River Carron Trail, for example, starts near the historic site of the Carron Ironworks and leads you through a landscape shaped by this heritage, eventually taking you towards The Kelpies.
Most of the main starting points, such as The Helix and Callendar Park, have dedicated car parks. For woodland trails like those in Carron Valley forest, you'll find designated parking which may require a small fee.
The network of paths within The Helix parkland is an excellent choice for accessibility. The surfaces are generally paved, wide, and flat, making them well-suited for wheelchairs and pushchairs while still offering lovely scenery around the lagoon and sculptures.
If you're looking for a more peaceful walk, explore the trails in Lionthorn Woods. It's a local favourite for its numerous path options that are often less crowded than the main attractions, offering a quiet escape into nature.
You can hike here year-round, but spring and early summer are particularly beautiful. During this time, the woodlands in places like Carron Glen are carpeted with wildflowers like bluebells. Autumn also offers lovely colours along the riverbanks and in the parks.
