The marvellous Eskrigg Nature Reserve is a great place for watching the native red squirrel. Once widespread throughout the UK, red squirrel numbers have been signifcantly reduced by disease and the competition of their American cousins, the grey squirrel. The reserve is made up of areas of heath, wetland, open water and woodland, supporting a wide variety of organisms. The visitor centre is up from 8am to 5pm in summer and 9am to 4pm in winter.

Lockerbie is a Viking name, given to the town in the 9th century by its Scandinavian inhabitants. It developed greatly in the late 18th century, when it became a popular stop off on the London to Glasgow stagecoach route. Today the market town is popular with outdoor enthusiasts due to the excellent Eskrigg Nature Reserve and the Annandale Way long distance trail, a branch of which runs through the town. The town will forever be associated with the Lockerbie Air Disaster of 1988, when Pan Am Flight 103 was blown up and crashed into the town. 270 people lost their lives, 259 onboard and 11 Lockerbie residents.
