The Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), inaugurated on September 2, 1996, is the current symbol of the city of Niterói. The futuristic form created by Niemeyer has become a landmark of modern architecture worldwide, and is considered one of the seven wonders of the world in museums by specialized media. The shape of the MAC resembles a flower, or a spaceship, floating on a rock that advances towards the sea.

What a wonderful beach, just the way anyone dreams of a beach: full of greenery, with a blue sea, surfers, coconut trees, white sand and lots of sun all year round! This little corner of the native Atlantic Forest of Niterói is known mainly by those who live there, and even the true cariocas who live on the other side of the bridge have generally never been to Itacoá.

The trail that retraces Charles Darwin's route in Maricá at the time is around two hours long (round trip) and divides the district of Itaipuaçu and the neighborhood of Engenho do Mato, in Niterói. The entire route takes place within the Serra da Tiririca State Park (PESET) and is part of the Caminhos de Maricá Ecological Circuit, an initiative by the Sustainable City Secretariat, which promotes guided walks through the municipality. The original trail panel was opened in 2008 and was attended by Randal Keynes, great-great-grandson of Charles Darwin.
