Devil’s Staircase is a climb for mountain bike type gears and an advantage for those that can ride out of the saddle .My attempts have failed miserably, best of luck.

This is less a recommendation than a warning. Depending on your mood, this stretch of Strata Florida is either an exciting adventure of river crossings and splashing through puddles, or a slog through rutted trails filled with murky water of indeterminate depth, leaving you wondering why you aren't in the pub instead. Is it a road? Is it a river? Hard to tell. Photos are after a very dry June - in winter I'd probably bring a boat.

We rode to this bothy as part of a gravel bike tour. A very basic bothy, good for getting out of the mixed weather! Enough space for 4 comfortably on the sleeping platforms (6 at a push). Approach from above the bothy through the woods - there's a very well marked path. Avoid coming along the track that leads to the edge of the river as it's very wet and you will get wet feet. Note: the little stream no longer has a bridge across it as in this picture.

Legendary climb. Grind up the long straight, power through the switchbacks and hang on in as it eases off towards the top.

Legs and lungs are screaming by the time you reach the second of two hellish switchbacks on the Devil's Staircase
