The Au has its origins in the Tarbeker and Muggesfelder Moor north of the town of Blunk and then flows in a northeasterly direction past the eponymous town of Tensfeld directly towards the Great Plöner Lake. The catchment area includes the Nehmser Lake, Muggesfelder Lake, Seedorfer Lake and Stocksee. They all drain directly or indirectly into the Tensfelder Au. In the mouth of the Tensfelder Au, over 100 hectares have been artificially drained by a pumping station since 1968 after the river course was relocated.
