The beginnings of the firefighting movement in this village on the Vistula date back to 1926. It was then that a group of determined residents – including Jan Giermek and Jakub Herma – decided to join forces to fight dangerous fires together, once called the "red rooster." For decades, volunteer firefighters built this unit through their own work and sacrifice, passing the tradition down from generation to generation. In May 2026, the unit solemnly celebrated the incredible jubilee of its 100th anniversary. In recognition of a century of selfless service and saving human property, OSP Smolice was awarded the Gold Medal "For Merit in Firefighting," which proudly adorns the unit's banner. In the past, before modern fire trucks stood in the fire station, the alarm was sounded by striking a hanging bell or with a trumpet signal, and they set off for action in horse-drawn carts. Today, it is a modern local safety center, combined with the history of people who, a hundred years ago, had only courage and simple tools.

Perfect bike road that goes on for a few kilometres! When travelling south however, the bike path ends abruptly and you'll find yourself on a busy road with cars travelling 90kph... but maybe it's still under construction?

History and Architecture Beginnings: The castle's origins likely date back to the late 15th century, when it was founded by Piotr Myszkowski of the Jastrzębiec coat of arms. Originally, it had an irregular, quadrangular shape with two towers at the corners. Remodeling: Rebuilt between 1520 and 1530, its current appearance owes primarily to the Renaissance-style reconstruction carried out in the early 17th century by the Bishop of Kraków, Marcin Szyszkowski. Owners: Over the centuries, the castle was owned by distinguished Polish families, including the Myszkowskis, Opalińskis, Lubomirskis, and Potockis. Damage: In 1945, the castle suffered significant damage from a fire.

Spytkowice Castle is a residence built on the foundations of a medieval castle. Excavations have revealed traces of the original defensive structure dating back to the second half of the 15th century. The castle was destroyed in a raid in the 15th and 16th centuries, as evidenced by the discovery of crossbow remains and bolts. Spytkowice Castle is a historic Renaissance-Baroque defensive residence located in Lesser Poland. Currently, it is not open to the public because it houses a branch of the National Archives in Krakow.
