Summit Lake is a crystal clear water lake in between summits, with the blue color contrasting with the sand gravel. A very special landscape after Mono Pass!

January 26, 2024, Mono Pass

Mono Pass goes on Mount Starr's backside, offering impressive views above Ruby Lake and Ruby Peak. The trail goes on sand gravel making switchbacks to the pass. From the pass, you can see Summit Lake and decide from there if you want to commit to a bigger challenge to Fourth Recess Lake.

Tyndall Creek is most of the time easy to ford and a great spot for a break. Fill your water bottles or even pitch your tent for the night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to hike in the John Muir Wilderness?

Yes, for any overnight trips into the John Muir Wilderness, a wilderness permit is required. These are subject to trailhead quotas and are essential for managing visitor numbers and protecting the environment. It's highly recommended to reserve your permit well in advance, especially for popular trailheads and peak season dates.

When is the best time of year to hike in the John Muir Wilderness?

The primary hiking season is from July to September when the high-elevation passes are generally free of snow. Summer offers pleasant weather and blooming wildflowers in the subalpine meadows. Weather can change rapidly at high altitudes, so always be prepared for potential afternoon thunderstorms, even in summer.

Are there any easy, family-friendly hikes available?

Yes, there are options suitable for most ability levels. The Long Lake — Mammoth Lakes trail is a great choice. It's a relatively flat 4.1-mile (6.6 km) walk that offers beautiful lake views without a major climb, making it ideal for a family outing.

Can I bring my dog on the trails?

Regulations regarding dogs can vary. In many parts of the John Muir Wilderness, dogs are permitted on trails but must be under voice control or on a leash. However, if your route enters an adjacent National Park, such as Yosemite or Kings Canyon, dogs are generally not allowed on trails. Always check the specific regulations for your planned route before you go.

What are the trail conditions like at high elevations?

Trails in the John Muir Wilderness are often rugged and rocky, traversing high-altitude terrain. Expect to encounter granite landscapes, stream crossings, and potentially snow patches on high passes, even in early summer. The high elevation means the air is thinner, so it's important to acclimatize and be prepared for the physical demands of hiking above 10,000 feet.

Are there any good options for a weekend backpacking trip?

The region is perfect for multi-day trips. For a rewarding overnight hike, consider the trail to Baboon Lakes — John Muir Wilderness. This 8.9-mile (14.3 km) route involves a steady climb to a series of scenic high-elevation lakes, offering a fantastic wilderness experience for a weekend.

What kind of gear is essential for a day hike here?

For any hike, you should carry the ten essentials. Key items for this region include layered clothing for changing weather, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), sturdy hiking boots, and plenty of water and snacks. A map and compass or a reliable GPS device are also crucial, as cell service is unreliable.

What makes the scenery in the John Muir Wilderness unique?

The landscape is defined by its dramatic Sierra Nevada granite, sculpted by glaciers into deep canyons, sharp ridges, and thousands of pristine alpine lakes. Hikes often lead through vast, open basins above the treeline, offering panoramic views of 13,000-foot peaks and turquoise lakes, such as those found on the Ruby Lake — John Muir Wilderness trail.

What do other hikers think of the trails in this region?

The trails in John Muir Wilderness are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Hikers frequently praise the stunning high-alpine scenery, the abundance of beautiful lakes, and the true sense of wilderness the area provides.

Are there any challenging day hikes for experienced hikers?

Absolutely. For a strenuous but rewarding challenge, the Midnight and Hunger Packer Lake via Lake Sabrina — Inyo National Forest hike is a great option. This 14.1-mile (22.7 km) route involves significant elevation gain and rewards hikers with access to remote, beautiful lakes deep in the backcountry.

How many hiking trails are in the John Muir Wilderness?

There are over 30 curated hiking routes available in this guide, covering approximately 590 miles of trails within the wilderness. These range from short, accessible day hikes to challenging, multi-day backpacking expeditions through the High Sierra.

What kind of wildlife might I see?

The wilderness is home to a variety of wildlife adapted to high elevations. Keep an eye out for yellow-bellied marmots and pikas in rocky areas. Black bears are also present, so it's essential to store food properly, especially on overnight trips. The area is also a designated zoological area for the protection of California bighorn sheep.
