Brienzer Rothorn Summit

Highlight • Summit

Magnificent mountain scenery, panoramic views of Central Switzerland or the Bernese Alps and the green-blue Lake Brienz in the valley... also a very beautiful ridge hike, but only recommended for those with surefootedness and a head for heights.

Faulhorn Summit and Berghotel

Highlight • Summit

The Faulhorn viewpoint offers an overwhelming view of all the mountain giants of the Bernese Oberland. Conversely, the view sweeps over the Pre-Alps, the Emmental, the Mittelland and the Jura to the Baden Black Forest and the Alsatian Vosges. Seven Swiss lakes are visible: to the east Lake Zug and Lake Lucerne, at your feet Lake Brienz and Lake Thun and to the west Lake Biel, Lake Murten and Lake Neuchâtel.

The Faulhorn mountain hotel at an altitude of 2,681 meters is the oldest mountain hotel in Switzerland. From up here you can enjoy an overwhelming 360-degree panorama. The mountain hotel has survived almost unchanged since its construction in 1830. It was an admirable achievement for its time, which still deserves our respect today.

Aare Gorge

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

An impressive gorge can now be admired where the river carved its way into the limestone for thousands of years. Around 200 meters deep and barely a meter wide at the narrowest point, the entire gorge can be easily hiked through via footbridges and tunnels.

There is a large car park at the main entrance near Meiringen. The hike through takes about 40 minutes.

First Cliff Walk

Highlight • Viewpoint

The summit attraction „First Cliff Walk by Tissot“ on First is open daily. The summit circular trail consists of an approximately 40-meter-long single-rope suspension bridge, an ascent spiral, and a 45-meter-long viewing platform. The circular trail leads along the west side of the First summit at a dizzying height along the steeply falling rock face back to the sun terrace of the Berggasthaus First.

October 23, 2022, First Cliff Walk

It is forbidden to drive up to this point "Cliffwalk am First". The only ways to get there from Grindelwald are: - Climb of almost 2 hours on foot; - By cable car (25 min). This costs 68 francs to go and return. Also the last ride down is at 17:30.

In fact, the Aare Gorge offers a large number of fantastic views and insights. A very impressive experience, best enjoyed outside of the holiday season and/or during the week.

Particularly nice in winter - take a sledge with you, take the train up to First, then hike a bit strenuous but mostly on gurten paths to the Faulhorn and the 1000 m down to Grindelwald by sledge.
