Rhume Spring

Highlight • Natural Monument

The hydrogeological background of this comparatively strong spring with its impressive spring pot is very interesting: The groundwater flowing down from the Harz slopes, including seepage water from the rivers Oder and Sieber to the north, rushes at high speed at a depth of around 50 meters through an underground karst cave system. In the source area of the Rhume, with great pressure on a wall, it hits clay-containing and thus water-impermeable rock. This forms an underground dam, which lets the spring water of the Rhume shoot up to the surface. The more or less bluish coloration of the water, depending on the incidence of light, is caused by light scattering of small lime particles, which the water absorbs on its way through the rock layers.

August 17, 2025, South Shore of Kiessee

The Göttingen Kiessee is a 15-hectare lake on the southwestern outskirts of the city. Formed by gravel mining, it has become one of Göttingen's most important recreational areas. The approximately 2.5-kilometer-long lakeside path is popular with joggers, walkers, and anglers throughout the year. The lake is only one to two meters deep and, as a result, is threatened by algal blooms and accelerated silting. To improve the freshwater supply, an inlet was built in 2003 to divert water from the Leine River, which flows east of the lake, into the lake. From an ecological perspective, however, this measure is completely pointless, as intensive agriculture in the Leine catchment area washes large quantities of fertilizer into the river, and these nutrients further accelerate the silting of the Kiessee. Therefore, the inlet is reduced or even closed, especially in warm early summers. http://stadt-natur-wildnis.de/wild/kiessee-goettingen/

It's always nice to take a walk around the lake. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to have a coffee at Graf Isang today because the restaurant was surrounded by a closed ice sheet.

The Wendebach has its source near Bremke on the border with Thuringia and flows into the Leine south of Niedernjesa. You can follow most of the course. From Bremke, a cycle path runs along the stream. The reservoir itself is approved as a bathing lake. It is a DLRG location and a kiosk on site (only on warm days). Unfortunately, the lake is very heavily contaminated with algae due to the fertilizer from the surrounding fields.
