Mississippi River Trail (Louisiana)

147km

90m

The Mississippi River Trail in Louisiana offers a unique road cycling experience, primarily along the historic river's levees. You'll enjoy expansive riverfront views, often spotting large cargo ships, and pass through varied scenery from urban landmarks like the State Capitol in Baton Rouge to rural stretches with ancient oak trees and towering grain elevators. While mostly flat, the sheer distance and exposure to winds make this a challenging ride.

This difficult 91.2-mile (146.7 km) route involves 280 feet (85 metres) of elevation gain and takes approximately 7 hours and 9 minutes to complete. Given the lack of shade and potential for heat, starting early in the day is crucial, and carrying plenty of water and sun protection is a must. Parking is available at various access points, including Audubon Park in New Orleans and Jefferson Park.

Part of a larger 3,000-mile designated trail tracing the entire Mississippi River, this Louisiana section provides a distinctive opportunity to engage with the region's history and culture. Its elevated position on the levees offers a traffic-free vantage point, making it a popular route for those seeking a long, immersive ride along one of America's most iconic waterways.

Cycle through the wild wetlands of Louisiana on the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve route, where you'll find yourself immersed in bayous, swamps, and dense forests. The scenery shifts from towering bald cypress trees draped in moss to palmetto stands, offering a glimpse into the unique atmosphere of the Mississippi River delta. Keep an eye out for alligators, nutria, deer, and over 300 species of birds as you pedal through this diverse ecosystem.

This moderate road cycling route covers 50.1 miles (80.6 km) with a gentle 74 feet (23 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 3 hours and 22 minutes. Be aware that the Barataria Preserve, a significant part of the park, is undergoing reconstruction until February 2026, with many internal trails closed. Access is mainly limited to the Twin Canals parking lot, and some trails are for foot traffic only, meaning you'll need to park your bike to explore those sections.

What makes this area special is the chance to connect with the natural and cultural heritage of the Mississippi River delta. The rich biodiversity and unique wetland landscape provide an exploratory experience beyond just a physical challenge. It's a fantastic option for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a flat, scenic ride away from city bustle.

It is not uncommon to find this section of River Road completely flooded. If that is the case, your only option is to cross the spillway via Airline Highway, using LA-3217 to minimize the detour.

This bridge, officially called the Veterans Memorial Bridge, is the last of a series of bridges built to reduce ferry crossings after a tragic ferry accident in the 70s caused by a drunk crew. It was the newest bridge over the Mississippi in Louisiana until the completion of the John James Audubon Bridge in 2011.

This beautiful levee trail, much less popular than its cousin on the opposite bank of the river, is paved from Algiers all the way to Hahnville with just two interruptions that are moderately easy to circle around. Being less frequented and quite well-paved turn it into a great route for training sessions.

This popular pathway is one of the few paved segments of the entire trail that runs along the shores of the Mississippi River, all the way from Lake Itasca, in Minnesota. This section is locally known as the Levee Trail, as it goes on top of the levee for a long while. It is frequented by road cyclists and runners.

Nice run goal, or runway, if you like less through the city. Has a special flair in the dark, the partially illuminated trees are very impressive.
