Renner Anderson
May 19, 2024, Trailhead of the Itasca State Park Hiking Club Trail

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has developed a Hiking Club program that features a trail in each of its 68 state parks and recreational areas (https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/clubs.html). Sometimes the trailhead for these hikes can be tricky to find, so here is the trailhead for the Itasca State Park Hiking Club trail. There is a marker with a password somewhere along the length of the trail, but I am not going to reveal that. You have to find it yourself!

The picnic area is a great spot from which to access the trails in Shingobee Recreation Area. For winter activities, the parking lot a hlaf mile up the road offers better access to the sledding hill and chalet. The word "Shingobee" translates to the Ojibwe word for local pine, cedar and spruce trees.

The Shingobee Recreation Area is a great spot for hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing. Public restrooms are available. If you come here for a winter hike with kids consider bringing a sled for the sledding hill! The warming chalet is open for winter activities, though it may be temporarily closed for Covid.

What is the best time of year for hiking in Hubbard County?

Summer and fall are the most popular seasons for hiking. Summer offers long, warm days perfect for exploring the lake-dotted landscape. What kind of difficulty should I expect from the trails?

Hubbard County offers a good mix of trail difficulties. About half of the routes in the area are rated as easy, featuring relatively flat terrain and shorter distances, like the Hiking loop from Lake Itasca. The other half are moderate hikes with some elevation changes, while a few challenging, long-distance trails are available for experienced hikers.

Are there any hiking trails with waterfalls?

The landscape of Hubbard County is primarily known for its beautiful lakes and dense forests rather than prominent waterfalls. While you may encounter small cascades along rivers and streams after heavy rain, there are no major, named waterfalls directly on the main hiking trails.

What should I pack for a day hike in this region?

For a day hike, it's wise to carry a small backpack with essentials. Be sure to bring:

Water and snacks: Stay hydrated and energized.

Navigation: A map or a GPS device like the komoot app.

Are any of the nature trails wheelchair accessible?

While many of the region's trails feature natural surfaces with roots and elevation changes, some parks offer more accessible options.
