Carn Marth and Hick's Quarry Pool

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the top of Carn Marth at 755 feet (230 m), there are incredible views over the rural countryside of inland Cornwall. With a rich history from mining and quarrying, this area is littered with disused mining works and quarries, like the former granite quarry here that is now flooded to form Hick's Quarry pool.

The war memorial (WW1 & WW2) to the "parish" Germoe marks the top of Tregonning Hill, at 194 meters above sea level. That doesn't sound very high, but it's higher than the rest of the country nearby, and the hill gives great views of the north and south coasts, Mounts Bay, The Lizard etc on a clear day.

Porthleven Harbour

Highlight • Settlement

A visit to the port of Porthleven is especially worthwhile in the early morning hours. Especially in the spring you have the chance to be completely alone and to watch the boats close in the fog. If it gets a bit rougher, even surfers around the pier romp about. The waves then pile up so tight that you can plunge into Brett (and Wetsuite!). Who likes himself.

Worth climb to the cairn for the downhill section on the main access road. Then drop into single track round the back lanes of Carharrack. Sweet! :)

Great coast to coast route across mid Cornwall mainly off road trails and occasional quiet roads. Coffee stops, pub stops, great scenery, mining history and coastal views. There is nothing to dislike about this route.

Beautiful little coastal village lying on the south of Cornwall. We stayed here on night two of our West Kernow Way adventure at the Harbour Inn. They were bike friendly and served great food. We watched surfers in the sea and the sun going down before tucking into local fish and chips.

September 13, 2023, Carnon Viaduct

The Carnon Viaduct passes over the Carnon River as part of the Falmouth to Truro railway line. The impressive 9 stone arches were completed in 1933. The original viaduct was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The stone piers of the former viaduct can be seen next to the existing viaduct.
